Some amps on the high end have dedicated power supplies for each channel. Others share the same power supply, thereby lowering the overall cost of the amplifier.Multi-channel amplifiers are popular in high-end home theater systems, as well as audiophile-grade music systems playing back audio in 5.1 surround.2.0 Types of Multi-Channel AmpsThere are numerous types of multi-channel amps, including solid state and tube-oriented designs. Increasingly, class D digital amps are made into multi-channel products that are very quiet, run cool and have lots of power compared to more traditional amplifiers.2.1 Three-Channel AmpsThree-channel amps tend to be more audiophile-oriented, with price tags that are in line with what you would expect to see from an audiophile monoblock or stereo power amplifier. It is not uncommon to see three-channel amplifiers come with separate power supplies to retain the audiophile performance while still keeping all three channels inside of one chassis. Three-channel amps are often used for applications needing power for the three front channels (front left, front right and center), but are by no means limited to those roles.2.2 Five-Channel AmpsThe five-channel amplifier configuration is the most popular for multi-channel amplifiers, as they can accept a five-channel output from an AV preamp and supply power to everything but the often separately-powered “point 1” LFE or subwoofer channel. 2.3 Seven-Channel AmpsSeven-channel amplifiers are increasingly popular for systems that use the latest in surround sound technology, such as Dolby True HD and or DTS Master audio. Not only do the amps provide the dynamic range needed to make a better-than-theater audio experience, the seven channels allow for both side and rear speakers of a 7.1 surround speaker system. The “point 1” speaker goes normally to a powered or active subwoofer.2.4 Amps For Distributed Audio SystemsDistributed audio systems that pipe music throughout an entire home use multi-channel amps that can have upwards of 24 to 26 channels of amplification. It is also not uncommon to see these amps be card-based, which means they are configurable as needed for each installation. Heat is a big issue for these distributed audio system amplification systems, so digital amplifier (class D) technology is increasingly used in these amps.

Get two of these Bad Boys I run two of these with Marantz AV7703 processor. I bi-amp all three front channels 11.2.4. All speakers are 4ohm. Each has its own dedicated 20 amp circuit. I can not turn it loud enough to even tax the amps. I use in home theater. I do feel they are not as sweet as some of the high end audiophile amps–thus would not suggest these for pure music. But perfect for home theater and those big action sequences. These do not power my subwoofers—each of those has a dedicated Crown K2 to give them a full 2000 watts. Cons: They do get hot. I have them at bottom of 42u open rack. I have a equipment room that can regulate the temperature but since the local rack temperature can get 20 degrees warmer than the room, I am thinking of putting a rack fan in to pull air across the top of the amp. However, I have yet to experience a thermal shut down. They barely fit in a 5u rack shelf–make sure it is rated for 100lbs to hold the weight. Be safe and ensure your rack can handle the weight and if you have a lot of other stuff in there like I do, that the floor and flooring can handle the weight. Carpet is not a stable surface unless you have floor spikes. In some of the other reviews it says con on XLR. Not a big deal since the distance from preamp to amp is maybe 1M and just over rated. Also make sure to ground all your equipment–run a wire and attach to each piece to prevent ground loop noise. Was this review helpful? 0 The spec sheet on the amp says an input sensitivity for full power is 1.6 volts. The amp is built by ATI, who have been in the business for a long time. I use the amp with my Marantz 7702A pre amp which has an audio analog output of 1.2 volts unbalanced and 2.4 balanced. The digital output is 2 volts at 0db playback. Those specs were identical to a Denon AV 3311 receiver that I had also used as a preamp before the Marantz. I can tell you that the amp seem to perform well with both pieces.
